Coffee chain Starbucks Corp has set an extra 5 pennies surcharge when Londoners buy their drinks in a paper cup as part of a 3-month trial.
The high street chain will apply the new scheme as of next February in its 25 London cafes in an effort to propel more people to use reusable ones.
Customers who use Starbucks’ shops involved in the trials will be charged an extra 5p for their drink if it’s in a paper cup.
The news came after Members of the UK’s Parliament were calling for a 25p tax on “disposable” coffee cups and vowed to ban them altogether if the levy doesn’t go into effect.
Given that Starbucks, which owns 900 stores across the UK, sell their own resuable cups for GBP 1, then they cut the price in half to 50p during a trial in 2016.
“We found that this did not move the needle in the way we thought it might,” Starbucks said in the statement.
“We will investigate the impact of a 5p charge on a paper cup, coupled with prominent marketing of reusable cups, on customer behaviour,” the coffee chain added.
